Here is a segment of a personal schedule generated from the Stuttgart regional transportation authority’s website:

Personal Schedule

The numbers in the “Traffic note” and “Fares” rows refer to footnotes at the bottom of the page (not shown here).  The “Duration“ and “Transfer” rows give you the total trip time and total number of transfers required respectively.  The other rows refer to origin, destination or transfer points.  Let’s look at a couple of them in more detail.

The second column describes a trip from Bondorf to the underground (tief) platforms at Stuttgart’s central train station.  It departs at 9:33 and arrives 52 minutes later at 10:25.  It also says that the R7 train that you board goes only to Herrenberg, arriving at 9:42.  From there you are to transfer to the S1 leaving 5 minutes later at 9:47.  The vertical squiggly line between the Bondorf and Herrenberg rows indicates that you are to ignore the row(s), as it don’t apply to this itinerary.  (Note that the R7 number is misleading, as it doesn’t match any number you’ll find on any schedule at the station).

The third column describes the direct trip from Bondorf, leaving at 10:03, to the upper (oben) platforms at Stuttgart’s train station, arriving 40 minutes later at 10:43.

As you can see from the remaining columns, this pattern repeats, so that you can travel to Stuttgart every half hour.  The exception is at 1:30 pm (13:30).  There is no train at this time.
