Weil der Stadt is a city southwest of Stuttgart that has kept its old city wall intact. Aside from having a quaint old town inside the city walls, Weil der Stadt has two other claims to fame. In February, it is host to one of the largest Fastnacht (Carnival) parades in the Stuttgart area. It is also the birthplace (in the 16th century) of physicist and astronomer Johannes Kepler. Kepler is most famous for discovering the laws of planetary motion.
Inside the city walls is the city church. There is nothing extraordinary about it, but it is still worth a peek. If you are interested in museums or astronomy, visit the Kepler Museum, located in the house where the scientist was born. It offers a self guided tour over several floors of the house. Many displays have English translations.
If you are lucky enough to be in town on the 1st or 3rd Sunday of the month, be sure to check out the Narren Museum. Narren is the name for the costumed figures that march in the Fastnacht parades. This small museum displays many of the traditional costumes that appear in the parade. In any case be sure to check out the Narren themed fountain along Stuttgarter Straße between the church and the eastern wall.
One highlight which should not be missed is the town wall itself. There is a park outside of the northern wall that offers a nice place to stroll and view the wall. The eastern wall, along the river, has perhaps the most interesting towers and gate.
The trip to Weil der Stadt takes about 45 minutes one way. The Kepler Museum takes 30-60 minutes - the Narren Museum less than 30 minutes. Add extra time to stroll around, stop to eat, etc.
A trip to Weil der Stadt could be combined with a trip to Zavelstein. Follow the Zavelstein itinerary to Calw. There is then a road that connects to Weil der Stadt.

Once in Weil der Stadt, find a place to park. The parking (curbside or lots) that you will find will likely be metered. This means that there will be a ticket machine nearby. Based on the fee schedule posted on the machine, enter the amount of money (in change) to cover the time you think you will need. Then press the green button. A parking ticket will appear. You must put the ticket on the dash of your car before you leave.
