Zavelstein is a small village about 30 minutes from Bondorf in the Northern Black Forest (Schwarzwald). Its real claim to fame comes for a few weeks in the spring when a million purple crocus bulbs planted in the fields surrounding the town come into bloom. But the village makes a nice trip at other times of the year as well, to stroll through the town and to visit the ruins of a small castle.
The main tower and some castle walls have survived. It’s fun to walk around the remains, peek into the cellars and imagine how it must have once looked. The views of the Black Forest from the top of the tower are well worth the short climb up.
If you are looking for a bite to eat, the Lamm restaurant on the corner of the main intersection in town serves lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon and dinner. Their restaurant has a wonder view out the back over looking the hills and valleys below.
If you have extra time, continue on north to the city of Calw. The town center, deep in the valley, has some wonderful old timber frame buildings and some interesting shops.
You should expect to spend about 3 hours to travel to and from, and to tour the town and castle ruins.
A trip to Zavelstein could be combined with a trip to Weil der Stadt. Follow the Weil der Stadt itinerary. There is then a road that connects to Calw, and from there to Zavelstein.
The castle ruins can be explored at any time. There is a €1 donation requested to climb the tower.
Start out of Bondorf in the direction to the south autobahn entrance. After you cross the bridge by the town gas station, go straight in the direction to Mötzingen and Nagold rather than making the left to the autobahn.
In Mötzingen, follow the signs to Nagold.
The road from Mötzingen will end at the B28. Turn left and then take the first right that splits off from the main road.
At the traffic circle and through town, follow the signs to Calw.
You will now be on the B463. Keep following signs to Calw. Less than 10km before Calw, take the exit marked with the towns Bad Teinach and Zavelstein.
At the next intersection, go straight, following the signs to Zavelstein into town. There will be one main cross street in town. The crocus fields (in season) will be down this street to your right. The castle ruins will be to your left.
